Today was our first success at foraging! Meet the Trout Lily! Also known as the Fawn or Glacier Lily. If you dig down about 8 inches you will find a bulb. It will look like the white part of a green onion. I wasn’t able to get a picture of the bulbs I gathered because we sampled them before I thought to take a picture. But the white stems you see below are the chunk right above the bulb. The flowers are gorgeous and the bulb taste like sweet corn! Foraging for us will be a slow progression, we are gardeners and hunters and for now grocery shoppers.. 😆  so foraging doesn’t fall high on our priority list at this time. It’s also so dangerous to miss identify and we have our health to protect. So as of right now we’re definitely taking it slow. However this identification was a breeze and so much fun!  The green house is coming along! We have sprouts! Lettuce and spinach is popping out everywhere! We got some more things started yesterday. I also took some propagating hous...

May 9 Update

Blog post #2  We woke up to 3 inches of snow. It started Monday night. It was about 9pm driving up the mountain in the blowing snow and dark we came to the conclusion that we had better start our supply runs at the crack of dawn. There were rocks in the road and lucky for us no trees. But we will be traveling with a chain saw for now on. Trees seem to go down pretty frequently.   The weather was not desirable today. But we were fortunate that it was warm enough to melt off pretty quick. We have very little snow left. But mud… well that’s another story. The mud is so thick and deep. A few projects have been delayed due to weather.   The water we had flowing down to the animals dried up. We were diverting run off so now we have to move our set up a little tomorrow to resume flow. We’re trying to stay out of my dads way as he is the mastermind behind the spring box. Having water flowing into camp to fill our tanks so we can shower, do dishes and laundry has b...

Getting Started

Image
So here is the plan. Sell almost everything! Buy a fifth wheel, pack up the kids, pack up the animals and hit the road! We have 53 Acres in the hills to explore and develop!  What started as my Mom and I having a cup of coffee and talking about packing up our family and starting completely over. We talked about the freedom that growing our own food and harvesting our own livestock would allow us. A little dream/ silly conversation over too many cups of coffee led us to looking up property in Idaho. And then sending out joking texts with listings attached. Everyone texted back that they were in. We all laughed a lot and made it a joke at first. Then it kept getting brought up in conversation again and again. Until finally my Dad said he was going to go look at property in Idaho. My parents made a trip over, then my sister and her family and eventually Alex and I as well. We were driving the 9ish hours to Idaho multiple time a month to look at property. And finally my parents came to...
